David Mosier, MD provides an overview of what breast reduction patients can typically expect from consultation through recovery at the Plastic Surgery Center of Austin.
Austin, TX — Breasts that are excessively large for a woman’s physique can often be debilitating from both a physical and mental standpoint, states Dr. David Mosier, a board certified plastic surgeon in Austin. In many instances, he continues, this condition leads to poor posture, chronic neck and back pain, deep bra strap indentations, skin rashes, and even a decrease in self confidence and body image. Additionally, he notes that many individuals may also experience discomfort when wearing particular articles of clothing or participating in certain physical activities.
At the Plastic Surgery Center of Austin, Dr. Mosier offers breast reduction surgery to decrease the size and weight of disproportionately large breasts, helping to relieve women of the daily strains associated with this concern. For patients considering this procedure, he says he will first explain the risks, benefits, and alternatives of breast reduction surgery during the initial consultation. If applicable, a letter – along with photographs taken from the neck down – will then be sent to the patient’s insurance company to determine if their specific plan covers the cost of breast reduction.
Once the operation is approved, Dr. Mosier says a surgery day is determined, and a preoperative visit is scheduled approximately one week prior to that date. During this pre-op visit, he explains that the breast reduction procedure will be once again reviewed in thorough detail, the patient will sign all forms of consent, and she will be issued any prescriptions that may be needed after the surgery. He adds that this is also a time for patients to ask questions and get clarification on anything about which they may still be unsure.
Performed at a certified outpatient facility, the Austin plastic surgeon says breast reduction surgery takes approximately two to two and a half hours to complete, depending on the patient’s specific needs. Following the operation, he notes that most women are able to return home under the care and supervision of a friend or family member, and follow-up visits are typically scheduled at two days, one week, two weeks, four weeks, and eight weeks post-surgery to ensure proper healing. He adds that swelling in the breasts generally takes about six to eight weeks to fully resolve, and any potential scarring from breast reduction surgery may take approximately six months to one year to reach its final appearance.
Ultimately, Dr. Mosier states that the breast reduction experience will vary on an individual basis, and he recommends prospective patients seek a board certified plastic surgeon to receive a more personalized outline of what to expect based on their unique needs and goals. “By consulting with a board certified plastic surgeon, you can help ensure you receive the most trustworthy advice as well as the highest quality of care before, during, and after your treatment.”
