How Do I Know If I Have Gynecomastia?
Some men have more glandular breast tissue than the average male, while others have more fatty tissue on the chest. The medical name for an excess of these tissues is gynecomastia, which can create an undesirable appearance in the breast region for men experiencing the condition. The symptoms of gynecomastia often include:
- Disproportionate breasts/chest for your frame
- A noticeable excess of breast tissue
- Enlarged breasts that may have a “swollen” appearance
Gynecomastia usually begins during male adolescence when the hormones associated with sexual maturity increase. Most adolescent gynecomastia goes away after 18 months; however, gynecomastia that persists beyond this period is typically permanent. The unsupervised use of body building hormones, heavy marijuana use, or even certain herbal supplements may exacerbate the condition or lead to medication-induced gynecomastia.
There are no non-surgical techniques that can effectively treat gynecomastia, but we are fortunately able to treat the condition with male breast reduction at the Plastic Surgery Center of Austin. Nearly all male breast reduction procedures will require a combination of direct excision of the glandular tissue combined with liposuction techniques to give the chest a flatter, more masculine appearance.
Whether one has an excess of glandular tissue (gynecomastia), fat (pseudogynecomastia) or a combination of the two, all males interested in treating gynecomastia should seek an experienced plastic surgeon that can alter their operative approach according to the patient’s individual needs and circumstances.
